The US has warned of the first significant heat wave of the new season. The heat index is expected to be above 95 degrees for three or more days in a row, putting the notice into effect. The average number of heat waves in the US today has doubled since the 1980s, and the length of the season has increased from about 40 days to roughly 70.
Biden administration wants to protect workers from heat
The US government has proposed a heat index of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which takes into account both heat and humidity, for employers to provide rest breaks. It would also require employers to provide a 15-minute paid rest break every two hours. The rule is an important step in the process to receive public input to craft a “win-win” final rule, an official said.
