Brazilian regulators of the social media platform Musk have been ordered to ban. Comments on the January 8th riot, Bolsonrou’s lawyer general, and a source close to the Brazilian parliament

Brazil ordered the social media platform to block Musk after he said he had reactivated the accounts on the platform.

“The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil,” de Moraes wrote.

The order to ban certain profiles on X may be linked to theJanuary 8th riot in Brazil, where people were angered by Jair Bolsonrou, the candidate for president. The platform has, however, become a hotbed for misinformation and other harmful rhetoric since being purchased by Musk back in 2022, with the European Union recently criticizing X for failing to effectively moderate false news around the Israel-Hamas war.

The constitution of Brazil was drafted after the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985 and has a long list of aspirational goals and prohibitions against specific crimes. But freedom of speech is not absolute.

Moraes warned that each blocked account would have a fine of 100,000 reais per day and that those responsible would be held legally responsible if they disobeyed a court order.

Musk had not published de Moraes’ demands as of late Sunday and prominent blocked accounts remained so, indicating X had yet to act based on Musk’s previous pledges.
