Google and Big Tech: After Mehta Decided the Dominant Player in Search and Search Text Ads, and Trump’s 2020 GOOGLE Decision
The case before Mehta traced back to the increased oversight of the tech industry under then president Donald Trump. The Justice Department sued Google in 2020 before Trump left office, and the lawsuit became the first of several against Big Tech companies to go to trial.
His findings are arguably the most comprehensive modern examination of Google’s search business, which over the past 26 years has become a $175 billion annual revenue behemoth that accounts for much of parent company Alphabet’s profits. It risks losing its prominent place on gateways to the internet if it appeals.
United States Attorney General Merrick Garland called the decision “an historic win.” The path for innovation isaves the way for generations to come according to the assistant attorney general.
In view of judgments in San Francisco and Washington, it’s not known how GOOGLE will adjust its business. Mehta will hold a separate trial to determine remedies in the search case, and a judge is mulling proposed penalties in the Play litigation. In the last few years, there have been changes to the way that internet giant GOOGLE has been doing things.
Mehta ruled that the dominant player in both general search and general search text ads is Google. He found that the deals that were made with partners harm competition.
