Google’s Promise of Seven Years of OS and Security Support: The Pixel 8 Pixel 8 Pro Launches on Android and the mm Wave Tax

The Pixel 8 is launching with Android 14 out of the box, but what’s more significant is Google’s promise that it will provide seven years of OS and security updates. That is double the amount of time it took for prior Pixel phones to be received and more than any other mainstream phone maker commits to. Every few months, it will be added features to thePixel 8 through Feature Drops.

Even though it’s a new phone that will get seven years of OS updates, it still rings as a surprise. That is much better than the three years of OS upgrades and five years of security support that had been promised for the previous flagships, and it is also a lot better than the lifespan of Apple’s iPhones. It is the promise that you will be able to get many more years of use out of your device that makes a higher price a little easier to swallow. It is assumed that Goggles actually makes good on it.

The new devices from the company are official despite having been leaked and pre-announced. The smaller and cheaper version of the device, called thePixel 8, is the same size and price as the largerPixel 8 Pro sibling. But the price has gone up this year, with the Pixel 8 starting at $699.99 for a model with 128GB of storage. (And if you’re a Verizon customer, that starting price is $799.99 for the same storage. You can call that the mmWave tax.) You’ll be able to preorder it starting today, October 4th, in either rose, black, or hazel colors. Shipping is expected to start on October 12th.

Google has the freedom to offer this longer support period thanks to using its own Tensor processor in the Pixel 8 series, which gives it more control over the hardware that’s gone into the phone compared to most of its Android competitors. Fairphone, a competing device manufacturer, wants lengthy support periods for its devices and has made it clear that it is difficult to support a phone after a chip maker ends support. The power is in its own hands, just like with Tensor.

Apple, a phone manufacturer that also produces its own chips, provides lengthy support periods. The company hasn’t made any promises about the number of years it supports it devices for, but it did release five major update for the 2017 iPhone X before its end this year. There will be occasional Apple security patches for older devices.

The Tensor G3 Cameras on the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro: Updated Features, Improvements, and Design Updates

The Tensor G3 is at the heart of the Pixel 8 Pro. It’s responsible for a lot of the new AI features on board, but Google doesn’t make any claims of better battery efficiency or heat management. ThePixel 8 Pro will come with obsidian black, porcelain, and a light blue “bay” in lieu of the standard glossy finish on its back glass panel.

Speaking of photography improvements, the cameras on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro offer a few upgrades as well. The base models are not available in the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel. There is a zoom of up to 5x in 7 Pro. The Pixel 8 Pro, however, offers a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera lens that’s now capable of focusing as close as 2cm in macro mode. That’s an upgrade over the 12-megapixel ultrawide camera found in the Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8, as well as the Pixel 7A’s 13-megapixel ultrawide camera.

Some of the most significant new camera features aren’t related to the hardware at all but are seen in the Google Photos app. The Magic Eraser feature that was announced at the I/O conference will be available for the Pixel 8 and lets you change an image by moving people around. The new Best Take feature makes sure everyone is smiling at the same time and takes images from a series to make that happen.

There’s a 50-megapixel main camera sensor with a slightly brighter f/1.7 lens attached. The ultrawide camera in the Pro has a higher-res 48MB sensor which is now capable of focusing as close as 2 cm in macro mode. The 10.5-megapixel front-facing camera gets an upgrade, too, now featuring autofocus. The Pro phone gets some pro camera controls, which include controlling focus, shutter speed, which lens is being used, as well as access to 50-MP photos via the native camera app.

Google Photos, Audio Magic Eraser, Best Take, Macro Focus, Voice Recognition, Speaker Translation and a Few More Aspects

Naturally, there are lots of new software features — all housed in Google Photos. When you take a series of photos of a group of people, you’ll have the option afterward to choose the best face for your subjects and save it all in one final frame. Audio Magic Eraser is an instrument that seeks to cut down on the sound of distracting sounds in videos.

The new chip brings with it a new photo and video capabilities to the lineup. The new feature, called Best Take, combines group photos that are almost identical into a single image, where everybody looks their best. Macro Focus magns small subjects while Audio Magic Eraser is supposed to clean up sound from videos.

It is far from going “full-on Bard” though it does get some artificial intelligence updates. Google says it will be able to understand speech better and recognize pauses and fillers like “um” more effectively. It will be possible to translate webpages to read them aloud. Even the keyboard gets a little AI flavor with a one-touch option to clean up typos and grammatical errors.

The Two-Lens Camera Benchmark for the Pixel 8: Performance, Battery, and Video Capability of a High-Resolution Android Phone

The Pixel 8 maintains the two-lens camera setup, updating its 50-megapixel main camera with a wider aperture and its 12-megapixel ultrawide camera with autofocus and macro capabilities. The new main camera is claimed to be 21 percent more sensitive to light than the Pixel 7’s camera and is the same sensor as used on the Pixel 8 Pro. If you want a more extended view, you’ll have to purchase the Pixel 8 Pro.

That new display now refreshes at 120Hz, up from the Pixel 7’s 90Hz, but it is not LTPO and can only vary between 60 and 120Hz for battery life savings. It will take a lot of money for a screen that can go from 1Hr to 120Hr. The same price as the Pixel 8 is the iPhone 15, which comes with a 60hertz screen.

Outdoors, the Pixel 8’s OLED screen will ramp up to a peak brightness of 2000 nits, and it supports always-on display features. The Pixel 8’s battery is 4,485mAh, up about 5 percent over the Pixel 7. I think that the battery is not huge but also not small, but I don’t think it’s worth a listen. Google’s 30W wired charger (not included) will bring the Pixel 8 up to 50 percent in 30 minutes, or you can use wireless charging for a slower but more convenient top-up.

Under the screen is the same style of fingerprint sensor Google’s used in past models, but now the Pixel 8’s front camera supports face unlocking with the same amount of security as fingerprint unlocking — yes, you can use it to unlock bank and payment apps now. It is not clear how a company like Google was able to make Face ID-like 3D mapping of your face more secure because there is not any special hardware for it.

When it comes to video, all of the phones are capable of capturing 4K video at 60fps, though only the Pixel 7A’s main camera can do so. The Pixel 8 Pro will also arrive with new video capabilities in December, like Video Boost for more true-to-life colors, which will even work in low-light conditions when using the Night Sight feature.

The design of the last year’s Pixel 7 phones was somewhat polarizing, but it was a nice improvement over the previous year’s model, and part of what made it special was how competitive their prices were.

In our testing, we found the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro offered all-day battery life, while the 7A offered slightly less. If the battery saver mode is used, the Pixel 8 phones should last between 24 and 72 hours. Of course, we’ve yet to test the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, so it’s hard to tell how long they’ll last in reality.
