It was a bad time for the Supercharger layoffs

Tesla is shutting down: Chargers can’t be in Brooklyn, yet Tesla’s charging station network is expanding – a commenter reported on Reddit

In places where demand for public charging is high, EV industry players have scrambled to find non-Tesla solutions for the dearth of chargers. The New York City initiative to move drivers of ridesharing services into electric vehicles led to long lines at the local showrooms, and increased charging demand. The company’s daily charging sessions have gone up ten times since the city launched the initiative last fall. Robert Familiar said the company was in talks to take over three of the company’s former leases, one in the Bronx and two in Brooklyn.

The opposite is happening, and it’s true that Tesla is not expanding its network. Sources told us that the Supercharging locations in the NY area were canceled, giving credence to Musk’s prediction of slower installations. Meanwhile, emails to contacts at Tesla’s charging division have been bouncing back, a contractor who works on the company’s charging station installations told E&E News. As the contractor was heading to a site in Dallas, Tesla’s construction lead called to say the whole team was laid off.

Gordon thinks it is more compatible with an out-of-money startup than the most valuable publicly traded car company in the world. Even if some new version of the Tesla team were to reach out to finalize the deal, “we wouldn’t do business with them, because the premise for a contract is reliability.”

In a move that shocked the electric vehicle industry, Tesla yesterday eliminated the jobs of hundreds of employees in its electric vehicle charging and policy units—workers widely reputed to be best-in-class in a rapidly expanding global business.

Over on Reddit, a commenter posted that their $7,000 project is also in limbo since Tesla needs to fix the software, but no one is responding. Another contractor related how his project building a 43-charger station has been canceled after their contact at Tesla said the entire team was fired.

It’s unclear if the project will be affected because of the contract withTesla to install up to 20,000 chargers at hotels. A spokesperson for the hotel chain did not respond to a request for comment.

The availability of CCS-to-NACS adapters, which are supposed to be sent to owners of Ford, Rivian and GM electric vehicles this year, are being affected by the cuts to the company. Some Ford Mach-E and F-150Lightning owners share emails from Ford stating their complimentary fast-charging accessory is delayed due to supply constraints. Some have moved from May to June, others as late as September.

Tinucci oversaw the design and implementation of the Supercharger locations, led the business-to-business destination charge projects, and spearheaded the installation of the Magic Dock to enable other EV manufacturers to plug in without needing to bring an accessory.

According to a former employee who spoke to The Washington Post, Tinucci met with Musk privately before the layoffs to express her opposition to the magnitude of the layoffs. Now with Tinucci out, along with most of the Supercharger team, Tesla’s big lead is at risk.
