Apple Cancels Google, Neither Apple Can: The DOJ’s First Amendment Requires Google to Stop Paying Partners for Search

The proposal says that a buyer approved by the court will be required to fully relinquish Chrome, along with any assets or services necessary to complete the transaction. It also would require Google to stop paying partners for preferential treatment of its search engine.

The proposal is a bit less complicated in a number of ways. The DOJ now supports letting Apple pay for things other than search. It also no longer calls for Google to drop its AI investments — the Times writes that, instead, the DOJ reccomennds requiring the company to “notify federal and state officials before proceeding with investments in AI.”

According to the company, it’s the bestsearch technology that leads to its dominance in the US market. It also says consumers are easily able to change their default search engine, and that Google does face competition from Microsoft and others.
