Huge Microsoft Outage is linked to CrowdStrike, it takes down computers around the world
Microsoft has apologised for the global outages caused by its Windows operating system, which are currently impacting many devices, including those in India. “We are aware of these issues and believe a resolution is forthcoming,” a Microsoft spokesperson said, adding that the company is working to resolve the issues. The outages started in the US on Friday and spread around the world.
Microsoft has been charged with EU antitrust violations
The European Commission has said that it’s “preliminary view” that Microsoft has breached EU antitrust rules with its tie-up of teams with its productivity applications in Office 365 and Windows 365. It could potentially face a fine of 10% of Microsoft’s annual worldwide turnover if it is found guilty of antitrust violations. If found guilty, the firm could face a fine of up to 6 billion.

Apple unveiled its new AI-based chat feature at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWC) 2018 that allows users to shake their head if they want to respond to Siri’s announcements. The feature was first announced by Microsoft and is currently available in Windows 10. Apple’s Smart Script feature will use machine learning to improve the appearance of users’ handwriting and spell check their notes.

Microsoft announced it’ll be working on developing a platform for developers to create artificial intelligence-based apps for Windows. The platform will enable developers to improve Windows’ new recall feature by adding contextual information to their apps that are fed into the database. It will also let developers integrate things like studios and filters into their apps.

Microsoft has unveiled the ‘Copilot Plus PC’, a laptop that it claims can run up to 16 hours and 56 minutes on a single charge. It is powered by Intel’s Arm-based processors, along with a battery that lasts for over 20 hours. The Surface Copilot Plus PC was tested in a video game and ran for 17 hours and 45 minutes.

Microsoft’s Chief Security Officer Chris Bell said that the company is continuing to make progress in its efforts to improve security and operations after being branded “inadequate” by the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRC). He added that Microsoft was coordinating engineering teams across Azure Cloud, Windows, Microsoft 365 and Security to complete the work in waves across the company.

Microsoft said it detected a system hack on January 12 that allowed the attackers to gain access to some of its corporate email accounts. The attackers targeted some historic Microsoft system test accounts that allowed them to access a “very small percentage” of Microsoft corporate email accounts, including members of its cybersecurity, legal, and other functions.
Russian SolarWinds hackers accessed Microsoft senior leadership emails
Microsoft has revealed that Russian hackers, backed by a hacking unit called’Cozy Bear’, attacked the firm in mid-October. “As of the date of this filing, the incident hasn’t had a material impact on Microsoft’s operations,” the company said. In August, Microsoft revealed it discovered that the same Russian hacking group had used the technique to try to steal credentials.
The former OpenAI CEO was hired by Microsoft
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will be joining its research team as an advanced AI lead. The new team will be headed by Greg Brockman, the former head of Microsoft Research, and will be led by Altman and Emmett Shear, OpenAI’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs. Earlier this month, Elon Musk also announced his decision to exit OpenAI.
Microsoft has a new Secure Future Initiative
Microsoft will use automation and artificial intelligence (AI) duringsoftware development to improve the security of its cloud services. “We’re committed to building an AI-based cyber shield that’ll protect customers and countries around the world,” Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chairman and President, said in a blog post. Microsoft also plans to harden its infrastructure to protect against encryption keys falling into the wrong hands.
