The Amazon Deal: A Political and Hostile Act by the White House, Replied to the Press Secretary. Amazon Can’t Burn Down the Newspaper

The White House Press Secretary made a statement that she had just spoken to the President. “This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” she said.

One of America’s wealthiest men claims that he will protect his newspaper from being threatened while it pursues its free market crusade, all while the White House deems the idea that Amazon might show pricing information to be a “hostile” and political act. It seems like that same wealth and power might serve to protect Amazon, no? And definitely seems like a man so committed to free markets that he’s willing to burn down his newspaper has no choice but to look the bully in the eye and really put his money where his mouth is.

Amazon caved almost immediately. “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen,” the company’s Tim Doyle told us.

Companies and experts warn that prices could rise for Americans because of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Consumers should shop for products made in the U.S., according to Leavitt. It is another reason why we are onshoring critical supply chain here at home to bolster our own manufacturing here.

Bezos has been seen as supportive of Trump. Amazon donated to Trump’s inauguration fund, and Bezos attended the ceremony in January. Last year, the management of the Bezos-owned Washington Post declined to endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in 36 years. The endorsement came after the editorial page editor of the newspaper approved an endorsement for Harris, who was opposed to Trump.

“We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We will cover other topics but many of the viewpoints against those pillars will be left to be published by others. Our country wasn’t able to arrive here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.”

The chaotic tariffs designed to crush small businesses are not free markets because they require the market to set prices, not crazy men who believe in the world. The Post threatening your child for merely displaying price information is so far from free markets that I would expect it to be in full attack mode here.

What of retribution, you might ask? Amazon is already doing things in the best interests of its shareholders, so why shouldn’t Jeff do the same? Let’s ask Jeff — here’s what he wrote to readers in regards to how his wealth affects the editorial decisions of the Post, with my emphasis added.

“You can see my wealth and business interests as a bulwark against intimidation, or you can see them as a web of conflicting interests. Only my own principles can tip the balance from one to the other. I believe that my track record as the owner of The Post backs this up, as I assure you that my views here are in fact principled. You are of course free to make your own determination, but I challenge you to find one instance in those 11 years where I have prevailed upon anyone at The Post in favor of my own interests. It hasn’t happened.
